Perimenopause: The Decade Nobody Talks About
If you've ever found yourself thinking...
"I don't feel like myself anymore."
"Why am I suddenly so irritable?"
"I'm exhausted, but I can't sleep."
"I've gained weight, and nothing has changed."
"Why am I forgetting everything?"
You are not alone.
Many women begin experiencing changes years before menopause officially begins, yet few are ever told what to expect.
That's because of a stage of life called perimenopause.
Unfortunately, it's something many women don't hear about until they're already living through it.
What Is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause simply means "around menopause."
It's the natural transition leading up to menopause, when the ovaries gradually begin producing hormones less consistently.
This transition can last several years.
For some women, it lasts only a short time.
For others, it may last eight to ten years or longer.
Menopause itself is defined as going 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.
Everything leading up to that point is considered perimenopause.
When Does It Start?
Every woman is different.
Many women begin noticing subtle changes during their 40s.
Some begin experiencing symptoms in their late 30s.
Others don't notice significant changes until their late 40s.
There isn't one "normal" timeline.
Common Symptoms
Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can affect multiple physiological functions.
Some women experience only a few mild symptoms.
Others notice significant changes in their daily lives.
Common symptoms include:
· Fatigue
· Brain fog
· Difficulty sleeping
· Mood changes or irritability
· Anxiety
· Hot flashes
· Night sweats
· Weight changes
· Irregular menstrual cycles
· Vaginal dryness
· Decreased libido
· Difficulty concentrating
· Joint aches
· Changes in exercise recovery
Not every woman experiences every symptom.
And symptoms often come and go.
Why Is It So Confusing?
One of the most frustrating things about perimenopause is that symptoms aren't always predictable.
You may feel perfectly fine one week...
...and completely different the next.
Some months your sleep improves.
The next month you're awake every night at 3:00 a.m.
Many women begin wondering if they're simply stressed, overworked, or "losing it."
You're not.
Your body is changing.
That doesn't mean every symptom is caused by hormones—but it does mean your symptoms deserve thoughtful evaluation.
It's Not "Just Hormones"
One of the biggest misconceptions is that every symptom during perimenopause should automatically be blamed on changing hormones.
At Regen Wellness, we believe in looking at the whole picture.
Sleep.
Nutrition.
Stress.
Physical activity.
Medical history.
Laboratory testing, when appropriate.
Mental and emotional well-being.
Hormones are one important piece—but they're only one piece.
Our goal is to understand everything that may be influencing how you feel.
You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone
Many women spend years wondering if what they're experiencing is "normal."
They push through fatigue.
Accept poor sleep.
Assume weight gain is inevitable.
Tell themselves everyone forgets things.
Sometimes those changes are a natural part of aging.
Sometimes there are opportunities to improve how you feel.
The first step is simply having the conversation.
Jenny's Take
One of the things I hear most often is:
"I wish someone had told me this was part of perimenopause."
Knowledge is powerful.
Understanding what's happening in your body doesn't make every symptom disappear, but it can help replace fear and frustration with understanding.
My goal is never to tell you that what you're experiencing is "just hormones."
It's to listen, evaluate your whole picture, and help you understand medically how all aspects of life can contribute to how you feel.
